Boone Family – Tumwater Branch

About

The Tumwater Branch of Boys & Girls Clubs of Thurston County, also known as the Boone Family Recreation and Teen Center, opened in 2001 as Thurston County’s very first club. The branch is housed in what was once a school bus maintenance warehouse on the Tumwater High School campus. The Club has gone through many refurbishments and improvements, allowing them to serve a large number of youth from the Tumwater community. Today, the average daily attendance is 160-180 youth. The Tumwater Club includes a Games Room, Gymnasium, a large separate Junior Teen Center building, Computer Lab, Homework Room, Art Room and an outside play area.

The Tumwater Branch prepares young people for real-world success by offering programs and activities that teach Healthy Lifestyles, Academic Success and Good Character & Citizenship. The Club provides academic support, an array of educational programs, enriching games and activities, time to play and enjoy the company of peers as well as positive adult role models dedicated to supporting the social and emotional growth of the youth they serve.

The Get Good Grades (G3) academic support program is a primary focus for the Tumwater Club. Teen members participate in Keystone Club, a service leadership club, and operate a weekly Club store to raise money for community services projects they are supporting. And family nights are a regular occurrence at the Rochester Branch and include dinner and fun activities for the entire family.

To provide youth with access to other beneficial programs and resources in the community, the Tumwater Branch partners with many different organizations, including the Tumwater School District, Tumwater Police Department, Tumwater Rotary and Kiwanis, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Together! and the South Sound Reading Foundation.

Academic Success

We want every child to graduate from high school with a plan for the future. Our members have resources such as:

  • Homework help in the education center
  • Reading and writing clubs
  • Programs in the tech lab and various art projects

We also have many volunteers who help mentor our club members.

Character & Citizenship

Every day, our members are taught about:

  • Being respectful
  • Being responsible
  • Having integrity in their lives and interactions with others

We maintain these expectations not just for our kids, but also for our staff and volunteers, whose leadership and mentoring help guide our young people by example.

Healthy Lifestyles

We want children to live healthy, active lifestyles and practice making good decisions for themselves. In order to achieve this, we:

  • Serve nutritious food for snack sand dinners
  • Encourage kids to play sports and be active
  • Help them find new ways to communicate in the art and music rooms
  • Make sure they are surrounded by great mentors
